Surfer Laird Hamilton shooting the Malibu pier two days ago in big surf - Mary Cummins, Los Angeles, California

Professional surfer Laird Hamilton shooting the pier at Malibu Beach. The pier was closed down because a piling came loose. It's pretty difficult to shoot this pier because there are quite a few smaller pilings to navigate around. You also need killer rad swells at least ten feet tall to be able to surf all the way to the pier. Fortunately the wave loses speed near the shore so it was easier. It's actually illegal to shoot the pier because it's very easy to surf into a piling and kill yourself or at least knock yourself out then almost drown. While I used to surf here at point one and three, I've never shot the pier because waves were never big enough, I have no desire to kill myself and I would never want to be cited. I bet he was cited by the lifeguard. This sets a bad example.
